How is sporting goods freight shipping classed?

Sporting goods freight shipping is classed by the NMFC item for each product, and many fitness and sporting items use the 13-tier density scale from NMFTA Docket 2025-1, effective July 19, 2025. Some products keep a commodity class. The lane, weight, accessorials and fuel also go into the rate.

A small pallet of cast-iron plates weighs more per cubic foot than a pallet of boxed bikes. The density scale and worked example on this page show a pallet of boxed exercise bikes.

Worked example: a pallet of boxed exercise bikes

  1. Measure the loaded pallet, pallet included: 48 × 40 × 62 inches = 119,040 cubic inches.
  2. Convert to cubic feet: 119,040 ÷ 1,728 = 68.9 cubic feet.
  3. Divide the weight by the cubic feet: 520 lb ÷ 68.9 = 7.5 lb per cubic foot.
  4. Read the class off the density scale: 7.5 lb per cubic foot falls in class 125.

How do you ship weight plates and dumbbells?

Weight plates and dumbbells ship on a heavy-duty pallet, stacked low and centered, then banded and wrapped so nothing slides. A tall stack of iron shifts its weight on a turn and can break the pallet deck.

Declare the scale weight of each pallet, because a reweigh compares the carrier's scale with the bill of lading. Keep plates off pallets of light gear so the heavy freight does not crush boxed items.

How should fitness machines be crated?

Fitness machines ship in their factory carton strapped to a skid, or in a wooden crate when the unit is used or unboxed. The skid should give a forklift clear entry from at least two sides.

Send the crate dimensions and the weight of the heaviest machine. Liftgate platforms have size and weight limits that differ by carrier, and a commercial treadmill can exceed them.
