How LTL shipping works
Your pallets share a trailer with freight from other shippers, so you pay for the space and weight you use, not the whole truck.
The carrier picks up, sorts the freight at a terminal, moves it on a line-haul trailer, and delivers it from the terminal nearest the consignee. That means more handling than a dedicated truck, and a far lower price for a small load. New to the term? Here is what LTL means.

- Freight is palletized or crated
- Timing has a little flex
- Freight class and NMFC help
- Liftgate, residential, appointments
- Bill of lading and tracking
What sets your LTL shipping rates
| Factor | What it means | Keep it right |
|---|---|---|
| Freight class | A rating from 50 to 500, set mostly by density | Measure each pallet as it ships, overhang included |
| Weight | The whole unit: freight, pallet and wrap | Weigh it with the pallet on |
| Lane | The two ZIP codes and the distance between them | Use the real pickup and delivery addresses |
| Accessorials | Extras such as a liftgate, a residential stop or an appointment | List them on the quote request |
Most LTL surprises arrive after delivery, as a reweigh or a reclass that rebills the shipment. Accurate dimensions up front prevent both. Check your class with the freight class calculator, or read how LTL freight is priced.
What we handle on every LTL shipment
- Class and weight. We confirm both with you before pickup, so a reclass is less likely to land on your invoice weeks later.
- Accessorials. We price the liftgate, residential or appointment on the quote, not after the fact.
- Bill of lading. We generate it when we book the shipment.
- Tracking. The carrier assigns a PRO number, and you can track the shipment by it.
- Rebills. We explain any reweigh or rebill you receive and question it with the carrier when it looks wrong.
When LTL is not the right mode
For a bigger load, volume LTL or a partial truckload usually costs less, and we quote them against each other. If the delivery date cannot move, expedited freight skips the terminals. A full trailer of freight goes truckload.
What to send for an LTL quote
- Pickup and delivery ZIP codes
- The pallet count and the size of each pallet
- The total weight, pallets included
- The freight class, if you know it
- Whether either end needs a liftgate, is residential, or needs an appointment
- The pickup date
LTL shipping questions
Do I need an account to get an LTL quote?
No. Our quote page prices LTL with no account and no obligation.
What if I don’t know my freight class?
Send the weight and the dimensions. We confirm the class with you before you book.
How long does LTL shipping take?
Transit is counted in business days and depends on the lane and the carrier. It is an estimate unless you book a guaranteed service.
Can LTL deliver to a home or a building without a dock?
Yes, with a liftgate truck and, for a home, a residential delivery. Both are extra charges, so put them on the quote request.
