How is appliance freight shipping classed?

Appliance freight shipping is classed by the NMFC item for each appliance, and many appliance items use the 13-tier density scale from NMFTA Docket 2025-1, effective July 19, 2025. Some items keep a commodity class. Price also depends on the lane, weight, accessorials and fuel.

Worked example: a pallet of boxed small appliances

Measure the loaded pallet, pallet included: 48 × 40 × 60 inches = 115,200 cubic inches.
Convert to cubic feet: 115,200 ÷ 1,728 = 66.7 cubic feet.
Divide the weight by the cubic feet: 450 lb ÷ 66.7 = 6.7 lb per cubic foot.
Read the class off the density scale: 6.7 lb per cubic foot falls in class 125.

How should tall appliances be packed for LTL?

Tall appliances such as refrigerators and ranges ship upright, strapped to a skid in their factory carton, with corner posts against crushing. A unit on its side or a loose carton without a skid is hard to move with a forklift and prone to tipping.

Top-load and do-not-stack marks tell the carrier to keep other freight off the carton. Declare those marks on the bill of lading, because a do-not-stack unit takes the trailer space above it and the carrier prices for that space.

How do you handle concealed damage on appliances?

Concealed damage is damage inside a carton that looked intact at delivery, such as a dented door panel or a broken shelf. Receivers should open and inspect appliances soon after delivery and report any damage to the carrier in writing with photos.

Visible damage belongs on the delivery receipt before signing, with a note on each affected carton. Keep the packaging until the claim is settled, because the carrier may inspect it.
