What is devanning?
What is devanning? It is the unloading of a shipping container, usually restacking the goods onto pallets so the freight can move on a normal domestic truck.
What is devanning, step by step
The container arrives at a warehouse or a deconsolidation facility. The doors open, the cargo comes out, and floor-loaded cartons are stacked onto pallets, wrapped and counted. Anything damaged in transit gets noted at this point, because this is the first time the goods are visible.
You may hear the same operation called deconsolidation, stripping or unstuffing. They mean the same thing.
Why it matters to the next leg
Devanning is where a container becomes freight that an LTL or truckload carrier can price. Until the goods are on pallets with real dimensions and weights, nobody can quote the domestic move properly.
So the useful moment to ask for a rate is when the pallet count and dimensions are known. Give us those with the delivery address and the ready date and the domestic leg can be booked while the container is still being emptied.
